Deep brain stimulation may help maintain speech function in patients with PD

In patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), treatment with deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) may have beneficial effects on speech, according to new findings.

Researchers from centers in Italy, UK, and France, presented the results of their observational study at the MDS 2022 conference: “Bilateral STN-DBS is an effective treatment in advanced PD,” they said. “However, the effects of STN-DBS on speech are still debated, particularly regarding the long-term follow-up.”
