In a closing lecture at AOCN 2021, Professor Seung-Bong Hong, Director of the Epilepsy Center at the Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea, presented an overview of the role of neurostimulation in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy.
Prof. Hong began by noting that although there are currently 24 drugs available for the treatment of epilepsy, but “35% of patients are not controlled by existing anti-epileptic medications.” For patients who are unsuitable for surgery and not controlled by multidrug therapy, neuromodulation is an option.
“Indications for neurostimulation for the treatment of epilepsy include multifocal seizure onset zones, non-localization of the epileptogenic zone, and patients who have failed surgery,” he said.
