Ultrasound of the brain emerges as a new class of neurotherapy

Based on recent clinical evidence, a new class of neurotherapy is emerging: ultrasound (US) of the brain. Three approaches are now available: MRI-guided focal US surgery, US-mediated opening of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and neuromodulation with techniques such as transcranial pulse stimulation (TPS). At EAN 2021, experts in the field discussed these technologies and their potential applications.

Dr Andres Lozano of the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada, described MR-guided focal US like using a magnifying glass to focus sun rays. This noninvasive, outpatient procedure creates precise brain lesions that induce immediate improvements in patients with tremor.
